From one and done to charity triathlon challenge

Published:

When Fleur Harman did her first triathlon, she was ‘one and done’. But when her friend Gina sadly passed away from Sepsis, she took up the challenge of completing six triathlons across six months in six different counties.

She explained: “I did a sprint triathlon last year, as an entry level thing and I remember telling my friend Gina about that and I said, ‘never again, it was so hard’. But I remember her telling me how good they were and how I should definitely do another one.

“When she passed away, I thought she said I should do another one and it would be a really good challenge."

Fleur wants to use the challenge to help spread awareness of Sepsis and its symptoms

She said: “The reason behind doing six triathlons was there are six main symptoms of Sepsis and the whole purpose of the challenge is to raise awareness. A lot of people don’t know about Sepsis and what the symptoms are and so many lives could be saved if people knew this.”

So far Fleur has completed three of her six triathlons and has the goal of completing a long-distance triathlon in September, which is also Sepsis awareness month.

“It’s been a challenge; it’s been really tough.,” she said. “But at the same time, I think it’s really helped me from a mental health perspective as well as dealing with grief and the shock of what’s happened. You’ve got to stick to a training plan. You’ve got to be out there doing all three disciplines so it’s tough but I’m enjoying it at the same time.

“My first two were really good, I did two sprint triathlons in a week. My plan is to do mainly sprint and I’m hoping at the end to do a full distance one as long as my training is going okay because I am a complete novice. I’m not a runner, cyclist, or swimmer, but it’s been brilliant so far.”
